May 2009 will be widely regarded as the worst month in ICT’s short history, as they suffered the hell of relegation for the first time ever from any league. The Highland Marchers had walked from a 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock, to a must-not-loose affair against Falkirk, in Inverness, on the final day. The debatable dismissal of ICT stalwart, Ross Tokely, meant playing over an hour of football with 10-men. An hour that seemed to go on forever as ICT once more fell to a 1-0 defeat, and thus relegation from the SPL by just goal difference alone.
Relegation, however, would mean a return to the Scottish football league Division 1 and no more ‘Splitus Daftus’ (SPL Split)! This therefore allowed the Highland Marchers to know their destination and plan their route for the forthcoming eighth annual event, almost as soon as the fixtures became available in the July.
Alas, the fixtures were drawn and a third successive homecoming for the Highland Marchers, this time from Ayr – some 20 miles further than the length of Highland March 7.

The longest and most difficult Highland March to date finished in Inveress Caledonian Thistle's 'unjust' relegation from the Scottish Premier League. As is tradition throughout Highland March, the troops have put together a diray of events, which will certainly provide a valuable insight into just what these guys and gals have achieved.
Kilmarnock to Inverness - 184 miles in 7 days!!! It's just a walk!!!

Yet another Highland March passes as this 6th event came and went in no time at all. Possibly the most successful walk to date saw records broken left right and centre, from the number of new recruits for an End to End to the number of people to complete any leg.
Not many blisters were on show, as the SPL Split (or Splitus Daftus) threw up the shortest walk to date of Falkirk to Inverness. Despite this being done the other way round on the Inaugeral event, Falkirk Football Club have since changed location of their stadium to the other side of the town - meaning an option to hike over the Ochills and a third chance to take in the Pass of Glen Tromie.

Training for this one simply couldn't be the same as previous years, where personally, virtually zero training had been completed. I knew from the offset that we could potentially have a massive walk for the 5th Highland March (HM).
Since the completion of HM4 I had moved north of the border, cut down on my smoking habit and even better regulated my intakes of alcohol. I had therefore gained myself a firm footing to actually do some training, and it proved to be a god send.

HMV – Onwards and Upwards
I can’t believe I’ve been doing this Highland March thing for five years – doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? Once again the HM bandwagon was in full swing leading up to the off with all the troops busy(ish) with their respective training programmes.
Once again, however, the SPL guru’s don’t seem to be as keen as us when it comes to organisation as their wretched ‘spilt’ gets in the way again. With the top and bottom six sides in the SPL being settled after 31 games (usually takes 33) it still took these Muppets four days to come up with the remaining last two games for ICT. This brought about yet another walk away from Inverness but a new destination for the HM’ers – Love Street, Paisley.
