SOME FURTHER POINTERS FROM YOMPA

The Gym

The gym is a good place to go if you need to lose a few pounds (or quite a lot& ) in order to make the Highland March attainable.

There's no specific need to work on any particular muscle group, although obviously your legs are going to be asking a few questions as the week wears on, whilst a good posture is an ideal position if you're going long distance walking!

Walking

Walking is the number one training activity for the Highland March but takes up a lot of time as many experienced HMers will testify! It's a good idea to build walking into your daily routine, either by dumping the motor (!!!), or by getting off the bus or train a few stops earlier than you used to. Remember that once the Highland March gets underway, it's 20 miles a day, every day.

Running

Running is reserved for the true nutcases of the Highland March and whilst you might want to do some jogging or running during your training (if only to offset the monotony of the walking miles), running during the March itself will only serve to ensure that you'll be at the bar first (and hence it'll hurt your wallet as well as your feet if you persist in doing it)!

Other Stuff

There are marchers who swear by other activities, such as swimming and cycling. I guess it's a case of whatever floats your boat as it were. There have instances of 100% ened to end success on no training whatsoever, except for pool and darts, but then there have been many, many more casualties of day one using that very same training regime!
